Logitech G5 Laser Gaming Mouse
The Logitech G5 is a pretty awesome mouse. Its been widely heralded as
the best mouse of its time when it was released in late 2005 right
alongside the Razer Diamondback. However good the MX518 was, the G5 is
just that much better. This time it sports a laser in the optical
sensor as opposed to the LED optical. This gives the G5 a max DPI of
2000. At 2000 dpi, this
laser driven bad boy tracks like a gem. Its a fairly comfortable mouse,
and very rugged. Its well worth its medium range price. With 8 buttons total, the extra buttons are a nice upgrade from its predecessor, and help to free up your left hand for more important toggling for certain games. There are some complaints from people about the thumb cradle that leads up to the button as being a bit thin to fit those with thicker hands, but for me this hasn't been a problem whatsoever.
The Logitech G5 enables you to adjust the dpi on the fly as you can turn the sensitivity up or down to enhance your sniping skills or shoot from the hip Rambo style. Without installing the drivers you're limited to 3 DPI settings (400, 800, and 2000), but after you install the Logitech drivers with Setpoint you have a lot more DPI toggling options available to you. For the G5, the Setpoint software is excellent at handling Gaming Profiles or even application profiles, using different key mappings for applications as simple as Firefox or Internet Explorer.
The tilt wheel on the Logitech G5 mouse is pure awesome for gaming. You can set it up so that tilting your scroll wheel to either direction can quickly whip out your weapon of choice. The biggest complaint of the scroll wheel was the force required to click was quite a bit more than you're probably used to.
Overall,
the G5 is a more than great mouse and will most certainly suit your
gaming needs. The on-the-fly DPI toggling and the precision of the
laser will keep those frags flying long after your trigger finger tires!
